Rufus Somerby

senior designer

Rufus brings a contemporary perspective to R.A.Somerby, with a double major in Architecture & Urban Design and Economics from Hamilton College. His work centers on a “new heritage” approach — reinterpreting classical architecture through a modern lens. His interiors balance historical reference with minimalist restraint, often manipulating scale, proportion, and materiality to reframe traditional American motifs for contemporary living. Rufus pairs a strong design sensibility with a practical understanding of real estate, having previously worked on the Private Asset Research team at Cliffwater. This dual perspective allows him to approach projects as spaces to be lived in and long-term investments, ensuring that design decisions carry both aesthetic and financial value. Outside the studio, Rufus is an avid squash player and serves on the junior board of Citysquash.
